Mother Nature needs a beat down April 23, 2008

Posted by brandy in Annie Lebowitz is so jealous, Me & the Bard, Wednesday nights make me frisky, adventure, friends, i like cupcakes more than gluten, i like scotch & table dancing, i'm hot like fire, if you're shallow and you know it clap your hands!, it happened this week, it was a dance dance revolution, it's the environment stupid, let's not talk about how long this took, proof i attract crazy, something I won't forget, tequila consequences, when it doesn't go my way.
trackback

I’m alive.

There were a few times in the last five days that I thought I was going to die. A few times I wished I would just die, and once or twice where I actively went looking for things that would put me out of my misery but alas- I’m still standing.

Remember last Friday I was driving 10 hours to read Shakespeare at a wedding? Yeah. I did that. Then I danced like I was famous, got pictures taken in front of the elaborate wedding ice sculpture and won $50 in the hotel’s casino at 3am with one of my friends and two 21 year old men boys.

And then this happened:

A snowstorm. A serious, all-out, find your damn mittens again, snowstorm.

One of those painful, windy, tornadoes of cold that shakes you to your very core. The kind that leave your eyes watering and your skin chapped. Oh, and in case you were curious, here are all the shoes I packed for the trip:

Not an appropriate winter shoe in sight. Which made it tricky when trying to navigate my way through the icy ocean of a parking lot:

.
Thankfully my friend (of smiley face fame) lent me some running shoes. So for the next three days we inched our way home staying at friends homes and in hotels (avoiding the icy and scary roads when possible), I wore trusty running shoes and hid away my beautiful, impractical shoes.

The last few days have honestly been some of the longest in my life. I’ve cried a lot out of frustration. I’ve consumed a lot of gluten. I’ve seen car accidents, dealt with a poor mannered bride and may have possibly gotten strep throat from someone…

But? They’ve also been fantastic. I met an elderly woman who loved me so much she told me her son commented that I was a ‘looker’ when he came to pick her up. I’ve laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. I danced until I was sweaty. I played a lot of cards. I sang to Nsync, solved my first logic problem in my puzzle book and realized I’m not the only one who makes mistakes.

I’ve spent far too much money and the idea of ever staying in a hotel again- or even getting in a car again leaves me searching for my hidden bottle of gin, but it was worth it.

Well, I can’t say that with 100% confidence, but I know I will one day. Especially when I look at the ice sculpture photo.

I still can’t believe you had a snowstorm. That weekend was glorious in my neck of the woods … not trying to rub it in …

Glad you were able to fit in the update amidst all the happenings. And the shoes are so pretty … even if you couldn’t wear them.

2. aRbit - April 23, 2008

Snowstorms are scary – I still get nightmares about an accident we had in Alaska one November. Glad you made it home safe.
Love your shoes – so pretty and so not practical :)

3. alexa - April 23, 2008

that stinks about the snow!!

but in a weird way it kinda seems like a fun adventure. hell, it made quite the blog post : )

4. Paige Jennifer - April 23, 2008

At least you ate cake. I’d drive through three blizzards for some wedding cake.

And I’ve worn flip flops in snow plenty. What? I refuse to shelve my pedicure habit just because of some silly sub zero storm. Geesh.

Welcome home!!!

5. brandy - April 23, 2008

EM- I KNOW! I saw photos of what it was like your way in the news and got insanely jealous. Basically the weatherman was like “if you are in Western Canada, it sucks to be alive, but out East… well you hit the jackpot!”. Glad someone has nice weather right now!

aRbit- Thanks! And a accident in Alaska sounds scarier than anything I faced.

Alexa- See, I thought it would be an adventure… maybe if I was less type-A about travel or if I loved the hotel rooms we encountered it would feel like that but I just got stressed out. And drank things called “wildberry spritzers”. Don’t ask.

Paige Jennifer- Thanks for the welcome! As for the flip flops, I’ve worn them in winter too. But three days of driving without proper shoes makes me nervous. I blame this on my mom and her outspoken belief that it’s only when I’m improperly dressed for the elements that I will get into an accident.

6. glamorous152 - April 23, 2008

fab shoes! sucks about the winter thing though. ugh…

7. Robin - April 23, 2008

oh my god, i’m not ready to deal with those pictures. i don’t believe in blizzards, and i don’t believe in temperatures below 50…

i’m a woman with principals, what can i say?

glad you’re safe.

8. Princess Pointful - April 23, 2008

Nothing is as aggravating as inappropriate footwear. I’m glad you were able to pull the good out of the situation, though!

9. Ashley - April 24, 2008

“…the idea of ever staying in a hotel again- or even getting in a car again leaves me searching for my hidden bottle of gin, but it was worth it.” hahaha you crack me up. If you want my bottle of whiskey, i’ll send that over too :)

Glad you made it home safely. I’ve definitely done the sandals-in-the-snow act and its definitely not so fun. I’m so glad its finally nice out here because I might throw a hissy fit/trantrum only befitting a terrible two if i glimpsed any snow right now.

10. Maggie - April 24, 2008

Your shoes are totally cute. I need to do some serious shoe shopping…I don’t think I’ve worn anything other than ugly tennis shoes in forever!

I can’t believe that crazy snow storm – ick! I’m glad that you made it home safely…hopefully spring will show up soon and mother nature will make nice after being so mean.

And congrats on surviving Shakespeare too!

11. Dutchess of Kickball - April 24, 2008

But how did the reading go? Did you need a little liquid courage?

Glad you made it home safe, even if it was a good/ bad memory.

12. Valerie - April 24, 2008

Yay, I’m glad you made it home safely!

A poor-mannered bride? Tsk, tsk. I hope to God I’m not like that when I get married, which will be a while from now.

13. Keri - April 24, 2008

Dang, the shoes thing would have just set me off the edge. I hate where closed in shoes so when it’s winter and I’m having to wear tennis shoes…. grrr…. But I feel the pain about going on a trip with the wrong shoes. I went on a skiing trip about 2 months ago and had slip on tennis shoes.. My b/f made me drive all the way back to the house to get some different shoes before we left where we were meeting everyone.

14. tiff - April 24, 2008

strep throat from someONE… oh you sly one, my dearest. glad you had fun. Someone could please tell Mother Nature that snow was supposed to end in March?

15. Abbie - April 24, 2008

It’s close to 80 degrees here, but I got all cold reading that!

16. Dingo - April 24, 2008

Glad you are safe. I think it’s a cruel trick of Mother Nature to trick you into thinking it’s pretty shoe weather and then dump the next Ice Age on you.

Is there a youtube video of your Shakespeare recitation? Do tell.

17. Accidentally Me - April 24, 2008

Um…what about this strep throat from “someone”…?

Me thinks there are some details missing there. And I really, really hope they involved the boys in the casino:-D

Glad you made it home safe!

18. Michelle & the City - April 24, 2008

holy hell. where was this wedding? alaska? lol
and the shoe picture just makes the post that much better. glad you got out of there without frostbite!

19. Sicilian Mama - April 24, 2008

I’m so glad you’re home OK! Well, relatively OK at any rate.

Those pink polka dot shoes? To die for. Sorry that they had to be packed away to stay safe from the freak snow storm.

20. Teri - April 24, 2008

When are we gonna see the ice sculpture pic?
And nice shoes – especially the pink polk dots.

21. brookem - April 24, 2008

She’s back!

You were missed my dear. I was so damn amused when I got your text on Saturday night that you rocked your Shakespeare speech! I was ordering another “pomegranate smash” martini (methinks you’d love it), and my girlfriend alerted me to the fact that my cellie was vibing. And it was you! Woot!

Sucks about that storm! Man. At least you are now home safe and sound. I hope this doesn’t deter you from wanting to get your booty here this summer (I know, I won’t let up!). :)

PS- Please email said ice sculpture picture.

22. tori - April 24, 2008

It sounds like a good time despite all the setbacks.

Those shoes are all adorable! Too bad you didn’t get to wear them. I can’t believe it snowed like that!

23. Heather - April 24, 2008

I knew you’d survive! So happy to hear you had a good time. I am requesting pics!

24. legallyheidi - April 24, 2008

omg those pink polka dot peeptoes…are quite possibly the cutest shoes i’ve ever seen!

25. Kayleigh - April 24, 2008

Oh my gosh, really? A snowstorm? What the…?

I also have to comment on how beautiful your shoes are. I was literally mesmerized by that photo. Although taxing and stressful, your weekend sounded like a blast.

At least it’s over, right? No more worrying about Billy Shakespeare!

26. Kathryn - April 24, 2008

we had a snow storm Friday night too – CRAZY!!!!

glad you are alive, sorry about the ill-mannered bride (really, is there anything worse??) and yeah you for solving a logic puzzle!!

p.s. amazingly, I make mistakes too :)

27. Sparkel - April 24, 2008

Wow, I’m glad you made it out okay!

And I LOVE those pink shoes!

28. Caz - April 24, 2008

You’ll have to post real wedding pictures when you can! squee!
Sucks you had to drive through all that crazy snow. I can’t believe it actually snowed in Vancouver too. And it stayed on the ground overnight and all Saturday! in APRIL!!! Seriously, this weather needs to learn it doesn’t snow in April. Especially not in Vancouver.

29. k - April 24, 2008

we just had a snowstorm in seattle too – it is redonkulous! i love the snow and all the skiing it brings, but this is too much. i want summer! i want flipflops!

glad you made it home safe and sound!

30. Semichrmd - April 24, 2008

Snow in May? Who have thought! Thank God for smiley faced friends with closed toe shoes! I’m glad you had a great time & nailed your speech! Also, love little old ladies & ok, maybe old school NSYNC.

31. egan - April 24, 2008

Hold me! I find this post strangely attractive. I think it’s all the crying and all the mentions of Nsync.

32. Lefty - April 24, 2008

I know exactly what you mean. It’s gotten way down into the low 60s (Fahrenheit) here, and it has been driving me crazy. I had to put on long sleeves yesterday. Mother Nature sucks.

(And what’s “Me & the Bard”? Bard Pitt? jk. I know “the Bard” is Dr. Seuss.)

33. Someone - April 24, 2008

Lefty….the Bard as in THE bard…of Avon
Remember old English poet called W Shakespeare?

34. Are You Willing to Change - April 24, 2008

Wow! I can’t believe that it snowed so much, and it’s almost May. At least the wedding was good and you made some money in the casino. And in the end, it will be a great experience once you forget about the long car ride, frustration and staying in hotels.

35. Lefty - April 24, 2008

Someone: no, I’m not familiar with that guy. I can’t read.

36. CableGirl - April 24, 2008

Gotta love freak storms…not.

ok, I totally just showed my age with that comment. lol

37. Mel Heth - April 24, 2008

You are a trooper! (With really cute shoes.)

38. silverneurotic - April 24, 2008

Sounds really scary, but thankfully you were able to get home in one piece. How long did it take you to actually get home?

39. Vanessa - April 24, 2008

So glad you are safe! And while the shoes are not winter appropriate, they are super cute!

40. geekhiker - April 24, 2008

Um, don’t look at any of the latest photos on my site. No, really. You’ll hate me, and I don’t want that.

Glad you have survived, and trust me, the good memories are the ones that will, in the end, remain.

41. libby - April 25, 2008

canadian weather is enough to drive you bonkers!!! i missed you and am so glad you’re back!

42. larissalmarks - April 25, 2008

Thank God you’re alive and well! And thank God I have never been in that sort of insane weather!!!

43. Suebob - April 26, 2008

That snow would PISS ME OFF

44. raych - May 9, 2008

You’re friend is the Wal-Mart guy? SWEET! Always slashing prices.

I love how you pack a bunch of shoes. I do the same thing. 6 pairs of shoes for 3 days, because who knows what I’m going to feel like wearing. But damnit, I will be matching.
