Nobody understands me except *Mandy Moore February 19, 2008
Posted by brandy in and now you might know everything, anti-ascot, beauty can get ugly, brandy +mandy = bff?, confession of the day, don't hate me for this, famous people make for good gossip, holidays, i'm the sum of my failures and my achivements, is it weird this makes me cry?, it seemed like a good idea at the time..., music, this is what happens when you listen to a sad song, women.trackback
Today I listened to **Gardenia twelve times. I counted. Six times driving to the school (before you all smugly tell me you didn’t have work, I will say I didn’t either. I went in voluntarily to do planning. Because I’m saving up all my karma points for a new kitchen aid mixer.) and six times coming home. I listened to it once before I decided if Mandy Moore could take a run at being all angsty and filled with sorrow, then I could too. And let me tell you, I’m pretty sure by the tenth time around, I pretty much had nailed the song. There was a lot of head shaking and pounding of the steering wheel. And of course, plenty of witnesses anytime I was at a red light.
I love that my attempt at angst comes via Mandy Moore.
* Yes. I have Mandy Moore on a CD. I also think Mac computers are overrated and ascots make people look ridiculous. Now you know everything. And I know I’m not the only one with a song in my car that makes me feel guilty. So share yours- or just put that stone back in your pocket and retreat to your glass house okay?
* *Don’t watch the video. I linked to it so people could hear the song, but seriously. Mandy’s face contorts in really distracting ways during the video. And I don’t like her dress. It looks like a painting smock I wore in fourth grade. The color is pretty but I think she could have done much better. The only thing that could have made it worse is if she would have wore an ascot.
Oh I will most definitely bust out some Kelly Clarkson when I need ot be angsty and deep.
Ain’t no shame in it.
Also, I’m with you re. ascots, ridiculous. Agreed.
Ummm… Don’t drive a car…
I don’t know what i do when i need to be angsty and deep. I didn’t even know i was supposed to do something about it… *looking puzzled*
ABBA. Lots and lots of ABBA. And anything that could be described with the words “90’s,” “pop,” and “over-produced.” Spice Girls, I’m looking at you.
Don’t judge.
There isn’t anything I listen to that wouldn’t make me guilty. I like the cheesiest music. Hah..
I <3 Mandy. She did a cover of Umbrella, and it actually made me like the song.
My random cheesy song that I no longer apologize for is Bubbly, by Colbie Caillat. Truly. *ducks*
This song is such a departure, from what I know, of Mandy Moore, no? She’s doing all sorts of interesting neo-folky sounds. I don’t know if that makes any sense. But I don’t mind this as much as the bubblegum pop the pervades so much music these days. What I’m saying is, this song is not worthy of thrown stones
I’ll top you. I not only have “Gardenia” in my car, I have Mandy’s whole fucking CD. I sought it out, I tell you!
And it’s good. Sooooo good.
I didn’t know what to expect when I read Mandy Moore, but surprisingly really really good!
I have plenty of cheesy songs that I listen to, and over and over and over again!
Dare I say this? Ok….Barry Manilow (and I own a Mac). Am I now banned from this blog?
Mandy Moore’s covers cd from about 2003 is FANTASTIC – it converted me completely.
I think my secret favourite song would have to be Tom Jones: Sex Bomb. I cringe thinking about it, yet simultaneously love it.
I was with you until “Macs are overrated”…
Don’t worry, I have an LFO cd… and I listen to it. Sigh. Pop artists are just so damn catchy!!
I love that CD! (Mandy Moore, not LFO above me)
She dated douchebags Zach Braff and Andy Roddick – I think she can do angst.
I think Mandy Moore is adorable. So, don’t be ashamed – wear her creativity with pride. Though, I’ll have to think twice about your Mac comments … grrrr. ha.
I’ll admit I have a few Britney cds that I’ve copied from a few friends. They’re upbeat and save me from boredom on long drives back and forth to college.
nothing wrong with a little Mandy Moore action. I still rock out to “Candy”. No shame.
Who the hell is Mandy Moore?
I will admit that my guilty pleasure music is Britney Spears, but only her more clubby music like Toxic and Gimme More. I hide it on my ipod but when I need a burst of enthusiasm at work I crank that baby up. Sssh, don’t tell anyone.
Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway and Britney’s first two cds. Really, there’s no shame. Girls have gotta get it out somehow… I mean, otherwise, we’d drive everyone insane. You’ve gotta let us have our guilty pleasures.
guilty music eh? Well.. I have some Emmy Rossum on my iPod… some Backstreet Boys… but angsty? I stick with Nirvana… OH Nirvana.
I’ve had this whole hatred for Mandy Moore going on since 1998 (or whatever year she decided to come out). Because of the name thing – I think I’ve told you that story, so I won’t tell it again. But yeah, I hate her. We watched License to Wed this weekend and I almost turned it off. I hurt for John Krasinski and his poor movie choice. But that could just be me being clouded by my hatred of the MM.
As for the songs that make me feel guilty listening to? Hmmm…there are so many that make my husband shake his head. Jerry Reed, Barry Manilow, ABBA, Rihanna, and Wayne Newton…just to name a few. But I don’t know if I feel badly for listening to these. I just chalk it off to being “eclectic” or whatever.
As for the Mac statement…I’ll let it slide. Because I used to feel the same way about them (and to a point, I still do even though I heart mine more than anything). The advertising for them sometimes is a bit pretentious and annoying and if you go to into an Apple store, they are also a bit pretentious. But don’t tell Egan I said that, OK?
Oh! And I completely forgot – you will be so, so pleased with a new kitchen aid mixer! I love mine so much! It does EVERYTHING!!!
First time posting but I LOVE MANDY and this song it is perfect for my life right now too. I love your post too, I am in quite the similar place in my life right now and can totally relate! Thank you!
This is my favourite post. “Yes. I have Mandy Moore on a CD. I also think Mac computers are overrated and ascots make people look ridiculous. Now you know everything” CRACKED ME UP. I love this. I don’t have strong opinions either way on Macs. But there we go, those 3 things. And now I know everything. I’ve rocked out hardcore to that Weak in the Knees song. Now you know everything, too.
Guilty music pleasure?
Here I go incriminating myself…
If I need to belt a tune in a big way I go to “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” from the Grease soundtrack. Because, hey, I can’t sing but neither can Stockard Channing.
I also have a soft spot for bad club music, specifically Britney and Justin. I don’t own them on cd, but I do turn it up and sing along when they come on the radio.
I also sing a lot of angry Alanis and Ani, but I will defend them to the death.
Same goes for anything on the Immaculate Collection album. Madonna is my home girl.
HOLY. SHIT. Where the fuck were you this past fall??? I went and saw Mandy Moore not once but TWICE. And I had to bribe two different girlfriends to go with me. Love Gardenia. Ooh, and Ladies Choice (sigh). Um, gee, I sound like a seventh grader. But that CD totally rocks so I say suck it to all of you gigglers.
I kind of love Mandy Moore A LOT. I also think you are crazy for thinking Macs are overrated. I will let that comment slide though because I love you, even if you are a Mac hater.
Kelly Clarkson – love me some “Miss Independent”
(but on my iPod as I don’t drive)
Maroon 5. I’d only admit it here though.
Oof, sorry- couldn’t help but look at the dress. It is indeed, pretty rough. Good song though… I can see how this might form an addiction.
Me? I guess I don’t have a guilty song right now (which is weird for me! usually? I go straight to Wilson Phillips- Release me. I know, I know.) Lately I’ve been busting out Eddie Vedder. Because lets face it, he looks hot, sounds hot, and his lyrics are damn good. And frankly I’d like him to sing the soundtrack to my “Into the Wild” adventure if I had one.
Oh, and I like slash agree with your Mac comment. Egan will hate it, but I’m fine with that. Bring it!
I like that you’re saving your karma points for a mixer. I hope that works out, and soon.
I love me some alanis morrisette for rocking out.
Waita save those karma/brownie points, they’ll pay off
i loooove mandy moore.
and i loooove rocking out in the car.
i kinda sorta love mandy moore. her music is pretty fluffy but still, i crush on her. yes on the smocky-dress (not working for her). yes on her contorted face (i HAD to watch the video!). “latest mistake” is my favorite one on that album.
guilty car song? i guess i just admitted it!
Actually…I kind of love her latest album. It’s great for post-breakup music. *ahem*
I bought Ashley Simpson’s CD a few years ago….and I like it!
And it’s not a guilty one, but when I’m feeling a bit of angst, I pull out Alanis “You Oughta Know.”
This is me adding my voice to the chorus of “Oh noes, she talked shit about the macs!”
Overratted…possibly. But they’re just so darn cute!
You lost me at “Macs are overrated” Do I smell jealousy! LOL!
Okay I admit it…I listen to Lionel Rickie sometimes …he’s got soul…what??
You had me at “Macs are overrated.” Amen, sista.
I have a had a deep seeded love for Mandy since her Candy days, it only deepened with the theme song from Centre stage.
I also have about 4 Backstreet Boys albums.
And that’s ok. Because everyone likes to think that boys really want to steal you away from your horrible partner and lavish you with love and affection and presents.
I am such a Mandy fan, I don’t even hide it anymore, haha.
Not even James Bond in ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ could make the ascot look good. That is seriously how bad the ascot is.
Like a Dickie is any better than an Ascot! To hell with all neckish gear!
Paradise by the Dashboard Light…
I’m embarrassed I don’t know that song.
I love “She’s Like The Wind” or “Time of My Life” or basically anything that has to do with dancing that is dirty.
Oh and Evans you SO did not go there with your song!
Stop right now!
I love this song & I love Mandy Moore, I love her enough that I can forgive that hideous dress – sheesh…yikes.
Kelly Clarkson – Sober is my angsty song. Whenever I am sad or mad or just plain PMS’ing I crank that up and sing at the top of my lungs. Who need therapy when we have Kelly Clarkson & Mandy Moore??!!
So I read this entire post and all I recall is the Mac stuff. You can’t just throw that out there… well you can since it’s your blog. Please tell the Mac Masses why you feel this way though. Give us a chance to defend our beloved toys. Armie and Brookem, you’ve been put on notice!
I have had a Mac since the first one, the box thingy in 1986. I also use a f***ing PC at work. And I love me some Mac. When my 5 year old laptop broke on Thanksgiving, I went on BLACK FRIDAY to buy a new mac. I do not shop on Black Friday. But this year I was happy to – for my dear, sweet Mac that I would like to make out with all day long.
I’m not sure how you feel about pink but I’m sure you’d be in favor of donating $50 to breast cancer…KitchenAid does that when you buy their pink stand mixer. One more reason that everyone should have pink in their kitchen!
What’s an ascot?
ha ha, I SO do that. I get hooked on a song and I want to learn it. ALthough, it is rare I actually learn all of the words and usually make some up just for fun! OR I am really obnoxious and sing it grammatically correct. Oof, did I just admit that?
My kitchenaid mixer is my favorite thing ever. I am using it right this very second to make homemade samoas. I really want the new-ish pink one, but I’ll have to be fine with my graphite one that I have had since 12 years ago.
My guilty song is Danny’s Song by Kenny Loggins. I don’t usually tell people just how good that song always makes me feel. It shouldn’t be a song I like, and yet it is.
OK, I listened to it and now I, too, am hooked! She surprised me, that’s for sure! Gardenia may or may not have been repeated a few times over the past couple of days!
Guilty songs? Oh, boy, where do I start? I think I may have to make an entire blog post to this one…
Mandy is highly underrated, if my opinion means anything. I own this album too. And I love her. I really do. “Gardenia” is probably the one I listen to most. On repeat. To the point where my iPod begins to resent me, I think. Because it’s more of a Britney circa 1999 fan.
I don’t really feel guilty about my playlists so I don’t know that I qualify. I do, however, get a glare or three when I blast Dolly Parton from my speakers. I adore her. So very much. I think she’s just brilliant.
Also, I still love Hanson. “I Will Come To You?” Sugary sweet.
Mandy Moore rocked the house in Saved and I truly mean that.
I love, love, LOVE that song! It’s so beautiful and when things weren’t going so well with the boy I listened to it on repeat a million times. Even now when I listen to it, I get a little teary eyed…I just can’t help it. It’s kinda like John Mayer “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”. How can you NOT cry when listening to that song?
I f-ing LOVE that song!
Hey, I like Clay Aiken songs. And now that it’s in print, it will haunt me me until I die.
I used to love Mandy Moore…those were the days.
Pop is just not my thing. Although occasionally I can suffer a little bit of Justin Timberlake. But that’s only when I am a real smudge.
Read through your post again. Listened to Mandy Moore for the first time in years. “Only Hope” is one that I think I’ll never get tired of.
Be proud of yourself. haha.
I’m working on responding individually. This may take some time. But can I say, that I’m loving all that Mandy fans out there?? I had no idea!
Brandy and Essentially… Mandy Moore fans…yikes! I wonder if her fans will “love her forever and never leave her” I wanna know right now! Perhaps we should sleep on it and you can give me an answer in the morning?
I do come back and read the comments on blogs just as I’m doing now. I think many do, but they tend to only go back a post or two. Capiche?
Shhh…I heart the Gardenia song and I’m embarrassed I like the Taylor Swift’s Tears on my Guitar. Damn the radio station that started playing it.
I’m catching up on my reading too, so forgive the late comment, but I just felt compelled to confess that I have the soundtrack to Austin Powers 2 in my car: I sang along to Dr. Evil’s version of Just the Two of Us on the way home from work the other day, and realised I knew most of the lyrics off by heart. “From the first time I heard Frau / Say I had a clone…”
I feel that disturbing disclosure may have saved me several years of therapy.
[...] 3. My love for Mandy Moore. [...]
I love her, too. And oh my god, I just listened to this song for the first time and it is so beautiful.
