I had a different post.
It was a sober (pun intended) ditty filled with deep thoughts and clever lines used to hide my frustration. It’s a Public Service Announcement to anyone who has ever taken a sip of liquid courage and did exactly what they told their heart brain they wouldn’t do. Unfortunately the whole thing makes me feel a bit sad every time I read it, so I’m just going to tuck it nicely away for now and share it when I don’t feel like it so clearly puts my heart out into the world in size 12 font. Why am I telling you this? To teach you all that swamp water is bloody dangerous. So instead of a sad PSA post, you are going to get a post on one of my favourite topics-
Kissing.
Not only is it a great hobby, it’s something that I’ve heard discussed lately and I feel I need to share my views. Because ladies and gentlemen, kissing is one of the few things that unites the entire world- like feeling that your parents don’t understand you when you are 14 years old or discovering that your world is a brighter and happier after an excellent first date. Kissing is the glue that holds the world together. Okay, that’s a bit of a stretch, but I like what it sounds like so I’m keeping it.
Everyone raves about the first kiss, the magical moment when two sets of lips collide, the heavens open up and the world (finally!) begins to make sense. The term ‘first kiss’ makes girls swoon and boys pulse race. Men and women wonder when it will happen and when it does, they replay it over in their head like a movie that keeps skipping. But here’s a secret I feel like sharing- first kisses have never been my favourite.
A first kiss is a question mark. It’s cause for exploration, with doubt still lingering. It’s hesitant and nervous. It’s playing the game, but not showing all your cards. It’s a want. As in ” I want to know if your lips are as soft as they look“. It’s awkward hand placement, bumping noses, it’s serious and intense, because DEAR. GOD. ITS. THE. FIRST. ONE. Don’t get me wrong, first kisses get my heart racing too, I just wish they weren’t thought of as the Michael Jordan of the kissing experience.
So if I’m not a fan of the first kiss, which kiss is my favourite? The one you get while wearing cough medicine stained pajamas, sneezing and coughing? The goodbye kiss that says everything neither of you can say while at the train station? The lazy Tuesday morning kiss where you both risk morning breath suffocation? The kiss you sneak at your parents while elderly relatives clear their throat each time they see unmarried people holding hands? The one you want the world to see because you’re so drunk with love?
Although all of those can be exciting, my choice is pretty plain. The second kiss is by far my favourite kiss of all. The one you can have anywhere, whether it’s planned or spontaneous, the one that just has to be done. Why?
It’s an exclamation point. It’s confirming that you want to continue. It’s reassuring and amazing and filled with the nervous excitement that comes with the first kiss but with an added bonus- the comfort of something being familiar. It’s throwing your cards down and hoping for the best. It’s grabbing the outstretched hand of someone else and wanting to memorize every line in their palm. It’s a need. As in “I need to do this again because I like what I’ve had and I need more“. It’s an itch that has to get scratched or you will go crazy.
See what I’m saying?
Now, while you ponder my theory on second kisses, I plan on going shoe shopping for some killer high heels. So when the mood for a new kiss arrives, I won’t have to stand on my toes.
I hate first kisses!!! It is always awkward and uncomfortable. I cant really tell you which kiss is my favourite though because in truth I don’t kiss a lot. I don’t know why… I think that needs to change…
Ok, Now I want to read the PSA post. Yes, the second kiss is great, but the 1,257th is kinda special too…so I read…on the interweb…
However, the best kisses of all might come from two little blonde twin girls, except one of them tends to drool, but it’s still sweet, especially when they initiate it. OK, now I’m feeling all mushy. I’ll be back..
ARRRRRRRRR!!!!
t- Agreed! It DOES need to change. Perhaps if I come to visit we will stroll the city for lovely boys who will make our hearts go all a flutter…
MC- I understand what you are saying about the 1,257 kiss- I suspect they might be pretty great too. I just haven’t got there yet. Whoa. Depressing. Ethel and Lucy sound cute, even with the drooling tendencies. (It’s so much cuter when a cute twin drools then a guy who wants your number). Thanks for the pirate shout-out.
You ARRRRRRRRRRRRR welcome!
I have yet to reach 1257 either. Whenever I do, I think there will be a ceremony at center court, center ice or center field, or turn 4….or the end zone…take your sports pick.
My twins are cute but they sure as cloned feces didn’t get it from me
MC- Question- is your ARRRRRRRRRRR going to stay for the entire month of August, or is it just until you get tired of it? And I think when you do get to the 1257 kiss, it should defintely be at half court. That just sounds the most romantic.
I’ll stay for the entire month of August, but I have no idea what we ARRRRR talking about ;-(
I guess it doesn’t matter though since I just committed to something.
Half court it is then. I just wish Laker Announcer Great Chick Hearn was still alive to announce it…
I agree about the first kiss, awkward (even at 39!!)
but kissing is a wonderful thing
Oh crap, I just figured that out. Boy do I feel stupid. Time to walk the plank. How EmbARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRising. Ok, I’ll stop it now…
I just love kissing in general and great kisses or uh, kissers in particular… but you are so right… the second kiss says you both want to take this thing forward. And who doesn’t love the excitement in that!?
Kissing is beautiful. And I love every single one. I am a first-kiss-enthusiast. Despite my very first ever kiss being in our hallway with a tipsy 15-year-old on holiday with a mouth full of braces. Still go back to that… He probably doesn’t remember me, since he never wrote/called after he went back home. That’s good! He is a) German and b) he’s short. Now a have a tall Austrian! Who is one hell of a kisser.
I wonder if I should blog my first/second kiss with Sarah… hrm…
I am going to geek out right now and quote Dawson’s Creek (Season 2, Episode 1)
“That first kiss, it’s the passionate one. It’s the one filled by desire and attraction, and all of that, but the second kiss is rational. You got time to worry, and over analyze and most women….they prefer that first kiss, but I’m partial to the second one because it’s about something more. You’ll get that second kiss Joey and when you do it’ll be great. It’ll be real. It’ll be meaningful.”
Sigh.
Bre stole my comment, I was totally going to say that your post reminded me of that Dawson’s Creek episode with Joey and her sister! Good times.
I kind of like the nervous excitement of the first kiss. That is actually one thing I am sad about with being married…that I will never experience the awkwardness of it all again. The good thing is the comfortable kisses you can have any time you want that still make your whole body tingle every time you kiss. Even after being married for almost 12 years.
First kisses are overrated. One the most memorable ones for me was with my boyfriend (now hubby) in college when we has returned from Spring Break. We had not seen each other until a class we had together and the tension was building. We raced to the stairwell after class and just melted. It was electric. While I have many favs, My wedding day kiss was the best one though.
P.S. Those gluten-free pretzels are called Glutino brand.
I like all kisses!! Kiss 1 - infinity.
Of course, I don’t really like them as much if the man involved doesn’t know what he is doing - teeth etc.
I am an absolute kissing fanatic! I love it.
brandylu, you mentioned three of my favorite things in this post- swamp water, kissing, and heels! woot! i agree about the first kiss awkwardness. good call on the second kiss qualities!
ps- i have a couple of those “kind of posts” tucked away too.
I guess I never thought too much about it. I’m always one that’s eager to get past the akward “firsts” and get to the comfortable stuff, so it totally makes sense. Then again, I’m someone who likes hugging just about as much as kissing.
I hear you on the post that you set aside…I have so many like that.
But on to the kissing. I have to say that second kisses are my favorites, too. Maybe it’s because I think first kisses are awkward and silly. Unless you’re drunk off jello shots and someone pins you against a wall and kisses you like you’ve never been kissed before. Then that’s kind of sexy for a first kiss.
I digress….second kisses…yes…me likey.
damn - i rushed to the end hoping for a juicy story involving first (and second) kisses. alas, new shoes work well too.
MC- Oh MC. Maybe you don’t have the makings for a Jedi in you.
Kathryn- I sort of like that. I mean, I know you don’t, but I like knowing that first kisses never become comfortable. I don’t think it would be a good sign if they did!!
MC- I’m glad you figured it out. I will still reply to your email though. I feel that you need more emails from me to keep you from doing too much work at well, work.
a life uncommon- Exactly my friend, exactly!! Oh all this talk about kissing is making me want to go out and kiss.
Katrin- Yeah, isn’t it funny the first kiss? Who was yours and how at the time you thought THAT WAS IT! Now I giggle when I think back to mine… (and thank GOD things have improved)
Aaron- The question is, what would Sarah do? Although, I’m sure it’s an interesting story.
Bre- What the hell! If I would have known about this quote I would have saved myself the trouble and just posted it!!
Alas, I think this is my punishment for not watching Dawsons Creek. I was too busy watching Felicity.
bastet3- Okay, since the two of you were both going to comment about the same thing, I think I need to start watching some Dawson’s Creek. I think I’ve seen like, one episode completely. I know. I feel like I missed out!
Tori- Yeah, I suspect it’s a trade off. You may not get the new first kiss again, but you get the comfort of always knowing exactly what kind of kiss you are going to get. And since the world is filled with bad kissers ( I know this because I have kissed a medium percentage of the entire world), you are defintely dodging a huge bullet!!
pam- Aww that sounds so sweet! And I suspect that the wedding day kiss is probably a big one for a lot of people. I still ahve a while before that one though…. oh and thanks for the pretzel info, I will check it out!!
The Exception- Yeah, a bad kiss is worse than no kiss. Because at least with NO kiss you can pretend that there’s going to be a good kiss sometime which will keep you interested.
The Diva’s thoughts- Yep, they are good stuff. Like rootbeer floats and shoe sales.
brookem- Thanks dearie, I’m glad you agree. And it’s nice to know that you and Amanda tuck away posts sometimes too…
justrun- I understand that. Sometimes a good hug is far better than a kiss. Especially if the person kisses like they are a dog searching for the watering bowl.
Amanda- Yeah first kisses (for me) are usually the kind that sorta come out of no where, second kisses are much more thought out. Although, I had one really great first kiss… sigh.
Anne- Sorry. None yet. But I promise when a juicy story arises, you will be the first to know.
I have to go with MC on this one. the 1000+ kiss is also pretty great. However, nothing beats a slobbery wet smackeroo from a toothless mouth just trying to figure out this whole kissing thing, especially after it follows an awkward arm and hand flap symbolizing a poorly organized attempt at a hug.
YES! The kisses after the first kiss are the best! Especially if you have a great kissing partner!
Kisses can be sweet, erotic, fun, act like a ban-aid for a boo boo, and/or exciting. The key is finding a good kisser
Thanks Bran…emails are always welcome!!! I’m kinda email whorish. However, i can’t view personal email at work…Notice I used the english form of ‘are’ instead of arrrrr. Although I just typed Arrr, so I guess I blew it!
Oh how I love kissing in high heels….*le sigh*
I totally wish I’d read this post earlier than Bre, because then I would have quoted Dawson’s Creek, too! That’s special.
The second kiss IS amazing, but I’m beginning to have a great affinity for the “I don’t really care if my parents see this one, and neither do you” kiss (otherwise known as the “peace be with you” chaste kiss on the lips at a Catholic mass - yes! kissing! in church! and everyone’s okay with it! and I have someone to kiss! yes! calming down now…).
Great post. I read that every married couple should share a ten-second kiss at least once a day.
ha ha..i completely agree!! that was a brilliant post..! lol
second kisses certainly are the best..the first ones are pretty unmemorable!!
Kissing is fun, especially the kissing that leads to “fun stuff”
ooo I just finished Vanishing Acts this weekend….soooo good. I love Jodi Picoult.
I take this post very seriously but don’t have a lot of time right now to give it the comment that it deserves. I will be back!
Oh how I love kisses …
Hi Brandy
I just wanted to let you know I stole this (well, sorta stole… I attached your name and blog link to my thievery) and put this on my myspace page… I will take it down if you would like! just lemme me know
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=14964441
CableGirl- Lol, exactly. Some kisses are defintely worth the mess they make. Whoa MC- you have a following!
appletini- Oh exactly. I said it earlier, but bad kisses are worse than no kisses.
MC- That’s okay, I can be an email whore too. No personal emails at work? Dear lord. Now I understand why you resort to pranks all day!
Mel- le sigh. You and Amanda both! That might be my new favourite phrase…
Sarah- Ohh that sounds like a good kiss too!! Okay, now THREE people have mentioned Dawon’s Creek. I seriously need to jump on the bandwagon
Lefty- That seems like it makes sense. And I read that more people do cocaine every year than follow the 10 second kiss rule. Just kidding. I made that up. Actually, I stole it from The Office.
lemonade- I’m glad someone else feels that way. I feel like a jerk but there’s been a few first kisses that I don’t even remember..
Nutz- Me too! Although, I just read the 10th circle, and still have to say my sisters keeper is my favourite.
Airam- I understand, I completely understand. I felt that way when I was rushed but stumbled upon a blog discussing whether or not the characters of SATC could ever be real people.
Lissa- No worries, keep it up. I’ve never gotten into myspace so at least I know now that something I wrote is there..
Second kisses are definitely much better than first kisses. With my latest guy, I had to initiate an awkward first kiss (I went in for a peck on the cheek, he said “you’re going to kiss me aren’t you?” then laid one on my lips), but it was well worth it. The second was definitely much, much better…. as was the third… and the fourth…
sigh
I love kisses of all kinds. With one exception: attempted kisses from exes, when you REALLY don’t want to remember that you ever kissed before. Those? Those are never a good moment.
I’m a huge fan of the random passionate kiss of someone you met that night. Me, a whore? No way. There’s just something so cool about meeting someone and making out with them. It plays some crazy tricks on the mind. Kissing is damn good stuff. Great topic Brandy.
Ohhh, love this, Brandy. SO much truth here. Don’t get me wrong, I honestly always loved first kisses. But there was something even more special about that second one. Because, well, a lot of the time the second one never happened. So when it did, it meant that whatever we had started here was REAL, or at least worth giving a shot. Great post! And you’ll post pics of your new shoes, right? Cuz new shoes are right up there with second kisses in my book…
Clearly this is a contentious issue in the world!!! I agree with the majority, first kisses are exciting but don’t really answer any questions. Like, where this is going, and what the guy’s name is…
My faves are the unexpected ones. Where you lean in for the lip peck, mmmm, that was nice…maybe I’ll have another and another and all the sudden you’re pashing like you’re at the under age disco again.
Sigh…back to work…
Trished- Ohh so cute!
abbersnail- Or even worse, when you kiss someone after a few martinis. Someone you wouldn’t have kissed in your right mind while sober. Ugh.
egan- I always pegged you for a whore. Something in the way you puncuate your sentences I suspect. “Kissing is damn good stuff” Adding that to the list of t-shirt ideas.
brillig- You know, the whole posting picture thing is considered really advanced computer techno work right?! I will try though. I’ve gotten a few cute pairs lately… As for your views on kissing, you raised a good point- a lot of times a first kiss DIDN’T lend itself to a second one, making the second kiss that much better..
Ames- “like you’re at the under age disco again” might be the line of the day. And yes, I do know what you mean and I completely agree!
kissing is truly one of life’s most beautiful things. Pashes are even better (passionate kisses). I love pashing.
I second egan’s comments.
Though I am much less of a whore.
I think Mez wants to pash with me. Damnit, I have to stop speaking for other people.
Um, yes you can certainly add that to the list of t-shirt slogans sure to make us heaps of money. You mock my punctuation Brandy. I will fart in your general direction.
No Bran, I can’t check my personal email account. I just give my friends my work address. A true ‘Jim’ can never be held down from having fun at the Office! (do you want to throw the Michael Scott reference here, or do you want me to)
Woot! Thanks for the potter link! I’m the Weasley twins!!
HP’s birthday is a day for celebration and kissing!!
Egan likes being a whore. He learned from me.
Wait. No. Nevermind.
Mez- Pashing is a new phrase for me. Man. I learn so much from a kissing post.
Peter- Yeah, that’s a good thing. Egan’s whore-ishness is out of control. There’s going to have to be an intervention at sometime I think.
Egan- Oh you make me laugh. It’s funny, you want to stop speaking for other people and there’s a few that I want to START speaking for (ie. evil ex-boss)
MC- I still can’t believe you got Jim and I got Dwight. Seriously. That just doesn’t make sense in my world.
Amanda- I was Harry Potter. And let me tell you, I was excited. I think I may have jumped up and down, I’m just saying….
Me neither Bran. Take it again. Do you need me to give you the answers when no one is looking???
MC- I think ‘cheating’ on an office personality quiz might be a new low for me, so I plan on just taking it over and over again until I get a different result. But thanks for the offer.
Seriously though, Dwight?! I have way better hair.
Fact: yes, you do
Plus you are a Roger Moore Bond fan.
Fact: Dwight would say his fav was George Lazenby or Timothy Dalton…I rest my case…
MC- I think Dwight wouldn’t even get caught up in the Bond talk. He would change the topic to bobcats or his beet farm. Oh! And that’s another thing. I HATE beets. I’m so not Dwight. Well, we are both insanely smart, so there’s that I guess.
Yeah, but you probably have a much better sense of style and are not conditioned to eating Altoids every time someone shuts down Windows XP. No matter how you cut, you are going to come out ahead on this one!
OK …
As long as the guy doesn’t start licking your teeth a la Charlotte and the suckage isn’t a little out of hand then I love me some kisses.
Truthfully though I don’t like the first kiss too much … you’re all worried about where to put your mouth and such. The second or third time you go in for a smooch … those are the best. Oh and tongue! (I hope this isn’t too graphic for you) A little tongue play nice and gentle is ohhh so melt worthy!
Damn now I want to kiss someone!
I think it’s a great theory. I also like the idea that kissing is the glue that holds the world together…
Airam - I couldn’t agree more. I have had that happen before, also a guy I once dated licked my eyelids. Talk about skeevok! Please guys, don’t ever try that.
This makes me want to go to a train station and make out! I’ve never actually been to a train station, but they look so romantic in the movies. First order of business-find a boy. Second order of business-send him on a journey so that we have a reason to go to the train station and kiss goodbye. These will be my new goals for the week!
MC- True. And can I just say that I loved that episode?? I can’t wait for the season to come out on DVD.
Airam- Teeth lickers are horrible, but I’ve found tongue suckers to be the absolute worst. One guy sucked my tongue so hard that it made my eyes water. It was really painful.
Cheryl- Thanks. Perhaps I should start living by this theory of mine….
Semichrmd- LICKED your EYEBALLS? O vey! You know, I always here about bad guy kissers. I know that there must be some really awful girl ones, but the bad guy kissers always take the cake when it comes to the weird stuff.
Beth- Ohh train stations, how I love thee! Actually, I haven’t been in one in awhile. I think the last one I was in was when I was in Europe. Thaty do have a certain aura about them. Man. Now I want to go travel. And kiss someone.
I really should consider getting a “tramp stamp” so I can be true to form. It’s not easy being a man whore.
What guy in his right mind licks a woman’s teeth? Save the licking for other more interesting body parts, errr… I mean pashing.
It was a good one…and it was just on!!!!
egan- You mean, you don’t have a tramp stamp already? Weird. I always pictured you with one. Maybe get one the day Anna is born to celebrate? Something to think about.
MC- Man. I need to start watching more tv. I miss that show.
Nope, no tats currently. I don’t have any plans to change this either. I will stick to silly t-shirt slogans. Yeah, you rocked my blog. I haven’t eclipsed the century mark in quite some time.
I love kissing. Especially if it is a good kisser. I love kissing when you just CAN’T go further because of where you are or time constraints or whatever. My ex husband was a horrid kisser. Ugh. I am enjoying better kissing now.
Second kisses are great.
What’s the best, however, is the first kiss after being reunited after a prolonged distance. One of those one’s you can’t help but anticipate and seems like it is the most distracting, wonderful things in the world. Mmmmm.
egan- Oh it wasn’t me. I’m putting all the congrats on Airam and Amanda. They both added tons of comments, I was just there at the end.
steppingoverthejunk- Congratulations on moving on to better kissers!
Princess Pointful- Ohh that’s a good one too.
egan- And brookem!
Kisses are still illusional for me, I think I would like that to remain that way until I have one
