Superman’s Sister July 16, 2007

I don’t really talk a lot about my brother. Because #1 he’s too awesome for words (he IS one of the only people who can beat me at Scrabble and have me still like them afterwards) and #2 I wouldn’t know how to capture him in a way that would really do him justice.  It’s like trying to describe what the color red makes you feel, or how your favourite ice cream tastes like on a hot day, or what a hug at the airport feels like when you’ve been away for far too long. Some acts, some things, some people just defy description. I suppose everyone feels that way about the people they really care about.

However, there are moments that I think show someone for who they are, better than any words could.

He has a job that I don’t think many people understand and I know some people disagree with (reason #3 that maybe writing about him isn’t a great idea), however, he did something pretty fantastic Saturday night and I felt like sharing it. The article explains it, the video shows it. Keep in mind, the video is violent (it is a crash), so some of you may not want to watch. My brother “throws his superman costume on” about 42 seconds into the video. The video doesn’t show it, but after he jumps into the wagon, he does a tightwalk rope down the pole of the wagon (all while the 4 horses are charging), and grabs the horses necks to prevent a wreck.

So to recap- on Saturday night I drank martinis, painted my toes and looked at all my suitcases I had yet to unpack. My brother took a hero pill and saved the day for an audience of 63,789 people.

Now I know what Superman’s sister feels like.

Proud.

Oh, and in other news, I’m quitting my job tomorrow.

Good luck on your quitting!

4. Amanda - July 16, 2007

What a great post about your brother!! And what a great article! Is he older or younger than you? Not that that matters, but I’m just curious!

And yes, good luck on quitting your job!!

5. Airam - July 16, 2007

That’s incredible!! Talk about quick thinking …

Amanda the article said that he’s 23 … too young for me. Dang.

Good luck with the quitting … I’ve always hated doing that.

6. tori - July 16, 2007

11. HippieChyck - July 16, 2007

Crazy. How’s ur brother doing now?

As for the job - congrats. What were you doing in between teaching?

12. The Exception - July 16, 2007

Wow!!! (I am speechless)

And what is this about the job scene?

13. Bre - July 16, 2007

Sadly, I can’t watch the video on my mac (boo!) but from what the article said, it must have been one hell of a day. That’s often what I feel about what my father is doing. I’m sitting at home typing away on the internet, and he’s running into a burning building.

It’s rather fabulous being related to a superhero, isn’t it?

Also - Job details? Please?

14. bastet3 - July 16, 2007

Wow, those races look super dangerous. Those poor horsies. Good thing your brother was there to save the day!

P.S. - can I marry him, ha ha :P

15. Aaron - July 16, 2007

Awesome! I believe “hero” might be a bit of a stretch, but a VERY COMMENDABLE action indeed.

Good luck! You’re gonna be the first roving blogger hobo I know. :D

16. Bungi - July 16, 2007

Wow… *awed silence*

And hey, good luck with the quitting and all…

17. jasika - July 16, 2007

Man….I thought being the Green Goblin’s sister was cool. Rock on.

18. question girl - July 16, 2007

W O W…. your brother is the man to have around in case of emergency

now that it is over, how is he doing (and has your mom stopped touching him every 5 minutes to make sure he is really ok)

and i LOVE the segue to your job - so what’s up…

19. Clearlykels - July 16, 2007

Oh wow– that was really awesome to watch. Good on him!

20. pam - July 16, 2007

WOW! That’s impressive!

quitting your job?

21. Jennifer - July 16, 2007

Everyone else’s comments say exactly what I was going to say, but here goes anyhow..

Wow! Amazing bro you have there.

And you’re quitting your job?!

22. ammanners - July 16, 2007

i do have a special appreciation for a good scrabble player myself. as for the article and the events of that day all i can muster up is WHAT?>!?!?!

23. Beth - July 16, 2007

Well, that certainly beats a desk job. Thats very cool and hope he’s doing ok.

P.S. - As Supermans sister, do you get a costume? Does it involve good shoes? Because it really should.

24. ~t~ - July 16, 2007

I think your brother is extra special… I always have. I think like everyone else I need more info about this ‘job quitting .’

25. ~t~ - July 16, 2007

OH YEAH!! I wanted to comment on your banner. I like it a lot. Barefeet… yep sounds good! I think one say you need to help me fix up my page a bit…

26. Brrrr - July 16, 2007

outriders are hot!

27. brookem - July 16, 2007

you have mentioned your brother to me before, and in other posts. he sounds just amazing. you are very lucky to have such a great relationship.
hope today went well with the quitting of the job stuff!

28. Anju - July 16, 2007

That is awesome. I couldn’t view the whole video but the article was almost movie-like! You do sound very proud!!
Well, when I quit my job, I felt free as a bird…I hope you do too! :D

29. brandy - July 16, 2007

MC- You realize you are the quickest commenter I know? You must have some special Superman commenting talent because you are always first around here it seems. Is there some trick? A secret? Please, let me learn from you since I’m always commenter #38.

Michelle- Thanks dude. It’s always nice when a sibling can do something and you realize that instead of being jealous of what they do, your proud of them. Wait,… I think is called being an adult. What a glorious feeling. ;)

Greg- Thanks! And I think Hallmark should make a card for that. I totally think it would come in handy.

Amanda- Younger. So you know, technically I’m the boss of him. But it’s hard to boss someone around who’s doing cool shit like that while I’m listening to Oasis and trying to determine the course of my life.

Airam- Yeah, I hate the quitting too.I’m shockingly bad at it and easily swayed into staying. It’s like they say something like ‘gee brandy, please stay, here- we will give you a cupcake!’ and I fall right for it and stay a few more months. So sad. So true.

tori- Your husband was there?? I was there! And HippieChyck was there! And Brrr was there. ALL of us in the same city! It was like… a mini blogger meeting. Except, you know, none of us actually hung out. Next time I will give you more travel details so you can tell me if you or your husband will be in the area!!

justrun- I understand. It’s hard commenting about something so random about someone you don’t know. I just thought it was too cool not to share.

kristin- I have recently started saying ‘crazy awesome’ for things that are both a) crazy and b) awesome. We should be friends.

swf41- Thanks!!

Kathryn- I thought so too!

HippieChyck- He was in shock afterwards. Especially when the family of the horses he saved came over and started crying. Then my brother started crying, and then when he told me about it, I almost started crying. So, I did the typical thing and told him a knock knock joke that a 5 year old told me that didn’t make sense. As for what I was doing, I was teaching musical theatre to kids for the summer…

The Exception- Ahh the job. It’s just at a point where it makes mroe sense for my mental health to leave. Know what I’m saying?

Bre- I can’t imagine having a relative who risked their life everyday! My brother did one great act, one time. People like your dad, who do it on a regular basis, really awe me. Such courage!!

bastet03- Yeah, the horse situation was really, really awful. So sad! Thankfully, what happened was a freak accident and not a regular occurrance. Sadly, he is dating someone so you technically can’t marry him. Besides, he is known to steal sunglasses that his friends/family have, so he has that against him. Who wants to marry a sunglass stealer anyway?

Aaron- Then I guess we have different defintions of a hero since I think risking your life to help someone else defintely qualifies.

Bungi- Thanks Bungi! If there’s one that I actually DO suck at it’s quitting.

Jasika- Can I just say you win my favourite comment of the day with ‘rock on’? And kudos for mentioning the Green Goblin. He gets no respect.

question girl- Yes, I suppose my brother is good to have around in case of an emergency. He’s also fond of buying rounds for people, which makes him fun to party with. ;)

Clearlykels- Thanks dude!

Pam- Yes. Because sometimse sanity matters more. It’s not that big of a deal since I only had one more major theatre camp left, but I just. can’t. do. it.

Jennifer- The job is.. well, hard to explain in a public blog. But to say it’s frustrating would be the understatement of the century. Like saying that Posh Spice is sort of tanned, or that Harry Potter is cool.

Anne- Hello super traveler! I suspected you would be one to comment about the Scrabble. I do love that game.

Beth- You know, I DO think I need shoes. In fact, I would suggest the NEW pair of red shoes I bought in Calgary, but sadly they gave me blisters. I hate it when shoes do that. Costume suggestions anyone?

t- You know, I thought you would appreciate the barefeet. I need to change the title and make it bigger, but that’s currently #453432 on my list of priorities… As for the job quitting. I wrote about it in the letter. That’s now half a year late in sending and the size of a novel. I suspect you will get it at Christmas friend! (i’m thinking I might come to visit you sometime. I will give you more details when I’m not feeling so… vague)

Brrr- My brother will love that you said that!

brookem- It was tense, but worth it. It’s amazing how much better I feel after just saying all the things on my mind. Glad to hear your triathlon went so well!!

Anju-I do. I mean, well, I guess I will feel free after this Friday!!

30. Michael C - July 16, 2007

I just check my fav blogs way too often. Call it boredom, curiosity or a very serious medical problem. I also don’t think I have shaved in 3 months…

31. brandy - July 16, 2007

Maybe I should start checking in more often instead of, you know, watching “Posh Comes to America”. Oh hell. I’m not even going to pretend it was a waste of time- it wasn’t. I actually enjoyed it. And tomorrow I plan on talking about tarts, knickers and backchats. I wish I lived in London.

32. Michael C - July 16, 2007

See, that was a pretty quick reply. Now get over to my blog before I have to official close the doors…you’ll see what I mean. I got a scare today when my work’s firewall would not let me check your comments section. Eventually it let me back in. If they think I’m just gonna sit there and work, boy do they have another thing coming!!

Kickers? I want fish and chips, mate!!

33. bastet3 - July 17, 2007

ha ha, well when you put it that way, a sunglasses stealer is definately out!

34. brandy - July 17, 2007

MC- I totally rocked out on the question section of your blog. I’m especially interested in the answer to the giraffe one.

bastet3- I thought that might change your mind!! :)

35. Michael C - July 17, 2007

Well then Yoda, head over and read it! You did have awesome, awesome questions! Just make sure you save some for next week!
(that’s what she said… ;) ;-)

36. Brrrr - July 17, 2007

Dude … I don’t know your email but I wanted to let you know that Country 105 just had Kelly Sutherland on talking about the accident and he mentioned your brother and how he thinks of him as a total hero. Was a really interesting interview … don’t know if there’s a way you can listen to it on their archives or not but knew you’d swell with pride when they talked about your brother!

37. LeiselB - July 17, 2007

Hilarious! Yet wonderful….

And good luck with that quitting thing….

38. brandy - July 17, 2007

MC- Going to read it right now!

Brrr- That’s great! Thanks for telling me about it. I will let him know. Man. Any more good news and I’m pretty sure his already large ego is going to explode! :)

LeiselB- Thanks!!

39. CableGirl - July 17, 2007

Brandy- Kudos to your brother.

So, are you a free agent now? How’d the quitting go?

40. Beth - July 17, 2007

Wow! Your brother rocks! Must run in the family. Some days I wish I could quit my job. Sadly, bills and such tell me differently. Do you have another job lined up already or are you still waiting?

41. appletini - July 17, 2007

Wow! That’s awesome! There aren’t very many people in the world like that today. You should be very proud :)

42. silverneurotic - July 17, 2007

Superman indeed! Congratulations to your brother.

43. desiree - July 17, 2007

You funny girl… you are the cutest sis ever… and it sounds like you are as close to him as my siblings and I are to each other. THAT is so awesome. :)

44. egan - July 18, 2007

I like your brother very much. Is he available?

45. brandy - July 18, 2007

CableGirl- The quitting… sort of went. I was doing childrens theatre camps, so I decided to do the one this week (though on Monday I was going to quit until I yelled it, I mean, talked it out with my boss), but not next week. So, I guess I half quit. Oh well. At least i tried, right??

Beth- Well, the way my theatre job got swung, I didn’t really need another job until the fall- which was really nice and allows me to dedicate the rest of the summer to Harry Potter!

appletini- Agreed. Yes, I was pretty proud at first, now he’s calling to tell me about the tv show he’s going and the award he’s getting and I’m having to remind him of the times he wasn’t superman-like. Like, when he peed in the pool. :)

silverneurotic- Thanks!!

desiree- Ahh I LOVE it when people are close to their siblings. It’s a great feeling to know that even if we weren’t related, my brother is still someone I would want to be friends with. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Egan- Sorry no. But I’ll let him know you asked in case things don’t work out with him and his girl.

46. Beth - July 19, 2007

I so love that you are going to dedicate your summer to HP. Remember Seinfeld when George declared that it was going to be “The Summer of George!” This could be “The Summer of Harry!”

47. egan - July 19, 2007

Thank you very much Brandi for passing my love along. How thoughtful.

48. Buffy - July 20, 2007

Haven’t got to the video watching yet but….does the brother look anything like Tom Welling?
